Five Secrets About Caring For The Orchid Genus Vanda

Vandas were originally found in northern Australia and eastern Asia. If you’re a beginner, you may not want to start out growing a Vanda. These orchids require advanced care. Here are a few tips on growing vanda orchids.
Food/Feeding
During their growing season, you should feed these plants once every two weeks. Make sure that you use a balanced plant food at half strength. After September, you should start feeding them only once a month. When growing season comes in June, start feeding them twice a month again.
Water
Vandas require more water during their growing season. If you’re like most Vanda growers, you’ll hang your plant in a basket. If kept in a basket, they should be watered daily. After the growing system, you should just keep the plant evenly moist. However, make sure that you don’t allow them to completely dry out.
Repotting
It’s best that you repot these plants rarely. Only after the potting medium has gotten old should you repot the plant. This usually takes about two or three years. Unnecessary potting may hinder the plant’s ability to produce flowers. You should try not to disturb the plant once it has established its roots.
Potting Mix
Most species of this genera grow on trees. However, there are some that grow only rocks or in soil. You must take this into account when choosing the ideal potting medium for Vanda orchids. A good rule of thumb is to use coarse potting mix. One of the best types to use is fir bark.
Light
These orchids like a lot of sunlight. At the very least, you need to provide them with at least a half day of light. The brightest window in your home is an ideal place for your Vanda. As the seasons change, you will need to relocate them. Don’t forget to do so. If you relocate them properly, they will receive all the light they need year-round. These orchids are capable of blooming up to three times a year provided that they receive sufficent light.
